Life… And The Year of the Dog

Just rented a movie called The Year of the Dog. It was produced by Brad Pitt and the basic plot involved a woman whose dog died and how she became an animal rights activist and a vegan as a result. I kept waiting for a stronger plot to develop, but it was basically about her journey rather than a conflict/resolution type thing. While I enjoyed the film, it made me a bit queasy to realize that most liberal democrats are animal rights activists, too. But they also stand for the right of a woman to abort her own baby, a child living within her whose heart is beating and began beating at around 10 weeks gestation. This has always bothered me. I’m not a very political person. I view life through rose-colored glasses which turn everything I see into a sweet, harmonious blend of rainbows and sunshine. But for this one area, I could be a liberal. I really could. They also want life to be rosy for everyone. A liberal education for all, free medical care, welfare for the common man. I believe in all that. But why do they insist on saving whales and not working toward making life better for those pregnant women in crisis who feel they have no alternative but to kill their own unborn children? Why instead focus on their right to murder rather than their right to carry to term?

Okay, now that I got that off my chest, I’d like to also mention that those republicans who stand against abortion are often in favor of the death penalty and want people to retain their right to bear arms, concealed or not. It’s really odd. As a Christian environmentalist who does not believe in the death penalty and is in favor of gun control, I guess I’m an anomaly in today’s world. But maybe in the future things will change. Until then… Enjoy!
